FESTIVITIES: We celebrate a big festival in November. We eat chestnuts. We go to the funfair, and we watch shows in the streets. There are also stalls where they sell different things. At night there are a lot of concerts and we don’t have to go to school.

We have a national day too. In 1714 ( the 11th of September ) Felipe V, a Spanish king, took all Catalan rights and Catalonia (under Rafael Casanovas rule)lost its autonomy. Because of that, on this day we haveconcerts and demonstrations on the streets for Catalonia’s freedom. We dance our typical Catalan dances. They are called "sardanes". We make acircle, we hold hands and the music starts.

Do you know about St. George’s Day?

In this day men give a rose to their girlfriends because many years ago, there was a village with problems. A dragon ate all the animals and grils. One day he had to eat the princess. But a beautiful horseman saved her.

He killed the dragon and gave a rose to the princess.

From this day on, the men give a rose to girls and girls give a book to men. It is a lovely Catalan day.

In Catalonia we also celebrate Christmas. We have a private tradition. In the night of the 24th December we celebrate the "tió". We need sticks for all the people who participate and after we hit a very big log and sing a traditional song:

"Tió, tió caga torró

d’aquell tant bo,

d’avellanes i pinyó

si no en tens més,

caga diners

si no en tens prou,

caga un ou".

We lift the blanket and we find a lot of presents for everybody.

The kings are three men who bring presents for the people and the night of the 5th January all people go to see the cavalcade of the "kings". We sing a lot because the more you sing, the more sweets you get. At night the three kings go to all the houses and leave the presents.

We also celebrate New Year’s Eve.

Do you know about St. Joan’s day?

The night of 24th of June we make a very big fire and we also throw a lot of firecrackers. It is very funny to celebrate it, and it finishes very late.
