MetalHelloween (last album: Rabbit don’t come easy) Alongside Switzerland's Celtic Frost and Sweden's Bathory, Germany's Helloween were possibly the most influential heavy metal band to come out of Europe during the 1980s. By taking the hard riffling and minor key melodies handed down from metal masters like Judas Priest and Iron Maiden, then infusing them with the speed and energy introduced by the burgeoning thrash metal movement, Helloween crystallized the sonic ingredients of what is now known as power metal. Sadly, just as they were on the verge of breaking to a wider audience — even flirting with American success — the band's meteoric rise was rudely interrupted by internal strife and a string of bad business decisions. These blunders kept them from ever regaining their original momentum, but Helloween took their hard-knock lessons in stride and continued to prosper in the international metal arena on their own terms. More importantly, they remained the benchmark by which most every power metal band is still measured. |

RockThe German alt-rock quartet Guano Apes consists of vocalists Sandra Nasic, guitarist Henning Ruemenapp, bassist Stefan Ude and drummer Dennis Poschwatta. Ude, Ruemenapp and Poschwatta had been playing together for awhile and added Nasic in time to win first place in the 1996 "Local Heroes" competition held by VIVA, Germany's music TV channel. The Guano Apes' fusion of metal, pop and rap beat out over 1000 competitors, and their debut single "Open Your Eyes" was a Top 10 hit in Germany that year and stayed in the Top 100 for 30 weeks. Thanks to VIVA's heavy rotation of the video for "Open Your Eyes," Guano Apes signed a deal with Gun Records, who released the group's full-length album Proud like a God in 1997. The group's second single "Lord of the Boards," which was commissioned for the 1998 European Snowboarding Championship, was an even bigger hit and pushed the album to platinum status in Germany and gold status in other European countries. RCA released Proud like a God in the US in 1999. |

PopSarah Connor (last album: Sarah Connor - Us-Version) German pop singer and multi-instrumentalist Sarah Connor grew up listening to soul music, mostly influenced by her grandfather who was born in New Orleans. A church chorus became her first experience in the gospel music field at a very young age. After participating in different musicals while still attending middle school, Sarah Connor started sending demos to different record labels. The opportunity to achieve her goal came when rhythm & blues and urban producer TQ answered to one of them. In 2001, their catchy debut single, "Let's Get Back to Bed...Boys," became a chart-topping song in Germany. The powerful ballad "From Sarah With Love" followed in 2002. Both songs were featured on her debut album Green Eyed Soul. A sophomore effort Unbelievable was released in several months times, however it was only available to European fans. American pop music fans got their chance to hear Connor's work when she released her self-titled album, which was a collection of her previous issued overseas, in spring 2004. |
