The Island on Bird Street by Urli Orlev Contents: This book deals with a boy named Alex from the Ghetto, who is a Jew. He is eleven years old. He flees into a destroyed building, when his father and other people become "selected" by the Germans. There Alex fights to survive. He gets to know a few other Jews, who also keep themselves hidden. One of them leaves, in order to help in the rebellion against the Germans. The boy gets some money by one of the Jews from time to time and goes through a cellar underground to the Polish side, in order to buy important food there. |

There he meets a Jewish girl and the two fall in love. And as the girl has to move on they plan to meet in front of the red cross. And after approximately five months his father finds him. Criticism: I found this book very exciting and recommend it. It is not too brutal, so noone will get nightmares. |
